Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The media holds a powerful position in shaping societal attitudes and perceptions, particularly toward marginalized groups like persons with disabilities (PWDs). By influencing public discourse, the media can either perpetuate stereotypes or promote inclusivity. In Nigeria, persons with disabilities often face stigma, discrimination, and exclusion, fueled in part by negative media representations (Okeke & Musa, 2023). However, progressive media content, such as documentaries, interviews, and advocacy campaigns, can challenge prejudices and foster a more inclusive society. In Machina Local Government Area, Yobe State, where traditional views on disability prevail, media representation plays a critical role in shaping public attitudes toward PWDs. Studies show that tailored media messages emphasizing the capabilities and rights of PWDs can significantly improve public perceptions and promote societal integration (Abubakar & Ibrahim, 2024). This study examines how media influences public attitudes toward persons with disabilities in Machina, focusing on the content, reach, and impact of media campaigns.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite global advocacy for disability rights and inclusion, negative perceptions of persons with disabilities persist in Machina. These attitudes are often reinforced by media content that portrays PWDs as dependent, pitiable, or incapable. While some media outlets have made strides in promoting positive representations, their impact in rural areas like Machina remains underexplored. Limited access to diverse media content and deeply ingrained societal attitudes further complicate efforts to improve perceptions of PWDs. This research seeks to address these challenges by exploring the role of media in shaping public attitudes toward persons with disabilities in Machina, providing insights into how media strategies can be optimized to promote inclusivity.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study contributes to understanding the media's role in promoting inclusivity and addressing discrimination against persons with disabilities. By examining the situation in Machina Local Government Area, the research provides practical recommendations for improving media content and strategies. Policymakers, media practitioners, and advocacy groups will benefit from the findings, which highlight the importance of inclusive messaging in fostering societal acceptance of PWDs. Furthermore, the study adds to academic literature on disability and media studies, offering insights into the intersection of communication, representation, and social change in rural communities.
